
ABOUT
Mezzo soprano Charlotte Bateman is a recent graduate of the Alexander Gibson Opera School at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and remains under the tutelage of Elizabeth McCormack. Charlotte was a vocal scholar at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, and studied her undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2018 with a BA(Hons) in Music. She recently graduated from RCS with an MMus (Performance), where she held the Sheila Osborne Scholarship for Mezzo Soprano.
In 2019, Charlotte was an alto choral scholar at St-Martin-in-the-Fields and Sloane Square Choral Society. She also sang with St Martin’s Voices, performing solos in Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. Further choral experience includes the alto solos in Haydn’s Nelson Mass (St George’s, Bristol) and Mozart’s Requiem (Gerona Cathedral, Barcelona).
Charlotte’s operatic roles include Idamante (Idomeneo, RCS), Tisbe (La Cenerentola/Hampstead Garden Opera), Mrs Nolan (The Medium/RCS) and Dorothée (Cendrillon/RCS), Mrs Grose (The Turn of the Screw/Bristol University Operatic Society) and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni/Bristol University Operatic Society), Dorabella (Così fan tutte/LoveOpera), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi/Love Opera), Lady Victoria Wotton (The Picture of Dorian Gray - a world premiere/LoveOpera), and Imperial Commissioner (Madame Butterfly/Opera Bohemia. Performances in scenes at RCS include Mercédès (Carmen), Despina (Così fan tutte), Prince Charmant (Cendrillon), Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Baba the Turk (The Rake's Progress) and Joseph's Mother (Dead Man Walking).

In 2021 Charlotte was a finalist in the French Song prize and Governor’s Recital prize at RCS, and in 2022 and 2023 was commended in the final of the Governor’s prize. She is a grateful recipient of an RCS Trust Scholarship, and also holds a Help Musician’s UK Sybil Tutton Opera Award for 2022.
